Lewis Offers Millions to Steel Union in Strike Fight
Washington June 18 AP John L Lewis head of United Mine Workers offered to lend CIO United Steelworkers 10 million dollars to aid their nationwide strike against the steel industry. In a telegram to CIO President Philip Murray Lewis disclosed a special strike fund, repayable after victory. Murray, directing strategy in Pittsburgh, may reply tomorrow. Lewis assailed Taft and Congress over Taft-Hartley measures, while the House and Senate move toward controls bills. The government has hinted friendly price consideration for a steel contract with the union, with talks of a possible increase above 3 dollars a ton. The strike began June 2 after the Supreme Court overturned Truman’s industry seizure.
