Solons Demand Bigger, Faster Plane Buildup
Washington June 17 The Senate preparedness subcommittee denounced President Truman s stretched-out plane production program as an invitation to disaster and urged a 143 wing Air Force as quickly as possible. It warned Russia holds terrifying air superiority and by 1954 will likely have two to three times as many planes. The report says Joint Chiefs of Staff opposed the delay and that 1956 is a more realistic date for 143 wings if budget cuts pass. The panel insists every effort be made to obtain as many planes immediately and warns that air defense is a matter of life or death.
