Orphanage Fire Claims 32 Lives in Montreal District

Fire at the Hospice of Sainte Cunegonde in Montreal killed at least 32 people. Firemen feared collapse on two floors delaying searches as priests awaited last rites for potential victims. Only 26 bodies recovered. six elderly residents reported missing. First identified victims were women. blaze started just before noon in a T shaped building in the tenement district.

Monorail Plan Wins Approval in Assembly Committee

Sacramento June 15 MP A bill creating a rapid transit system for the San Fernando Long Beach area with a monorail type transportation was approved by the Assembly Committee on Municipal and County Government. The measure envisions a metropolitan rapid transit authority to finance an 88 million venture with federal aid. Ralph Merritt of the Mono Rail Assn. predicts operation within two years after approval of the authority.

LOS ANGELES June 15 The Los Angeles City Council approved the appointment of Samuel Leask Jr as city administrative officer a new post created by a charter amendment adopted by voters last month The job pays $16 500 a year.
