Seven Nazi war criminals including Oswald Pohl were hanged in a death hut at Landsberg prison. The executions began at midnight and concluded by 2:30 a.m. after a two and a half hour procession, breaking previous hangings by moving to a special setup rather than the usual courtyard gallows.
Miami police jailed five teenagers after a string of dynamite blasts damaged schools and buildings. Ringleader Alex Pelleni, a Miami freshman, led 16 year old Samuel Chambers son of Dr E Chambers, football players Joan and James Steffanide, and Daniel Ross in setting off blasts at Miami Jackson High School downtown Imperial Hotel Shenandoah Elementary and about 19 other sites.
Rainbow Pier remained closed to traffic for the third day as finger pier extension collapsed Monday night. City crews examine the pier to assess damage while high waves ease. Belmont Shore grunnion hunters report success with one veteran catching over 200 fish.
CIO Snc.Treas. James Carey accuses management of trying to scuttle price controls to profit from inflation while labor leaders seek to hide facts. Carey denounces attempts to bribe labor and urges continued price and rent controls with rollbacks, continued on page 20-A.
The governor signed a bill after talks with a Long Beach delegation led by Assemblyman Williams Grant and city official Joe Lamb. It frees 50 percent of tidelands oil revenue and all dry gas revenue from tidelands wells from the tidelands grant to Long Beach effective Sept. 23, addressing the city’s financial pinch. The measure, supported by the Assembly and Senate, removes court questions about transferring gas earnings to the general fund.
Los Angeles report notes County Administrator Wayne RR Allen received a pay raise raising salary to 18,000 with 19,500 as stated. Assistant Superintendent W. William A. Barr and Assistant Health Officer Dr K TL Sutherland also saw boosts from 10,104 to 10,668.
A Los Angeles pathologist warns against prolonging life to the point of incompetence and burden. Dr KR Morhardt of the College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Los Angeles argues he is not for mercy killing and cites Long Beach where he says the living dead walked the streets.
