Tragic Error as Two U S Planes Lost Over Korea

Two American C-119 Flying Boxcar planes were lost in Korea after what FEAF called a tragic error. Three crewmen were rescued after parachuting to safety, seven remain missing as searchers comb the drop zone. One plane was hit near the zone and crashed. the other dove 3000 feet after cargo shifted amid artillery fire. Captain James Hill reported parachutes from both planes, offering hope for the missing crew.

Price Cutting Spurs Route of Bargain War Across U.S.

A flood of orders hit New York stores as price cuts spread nationwide from Macy’s to rivals. Pendleton Brush Fire Rages at Camp Pendleton

A massive brush fire at Camp Pendleton has scorched about 10,000 acres and remains out of control despite efforts by forestry crews and 15,000 Marines. The blaze began yesterday in the northeast rugged terrain of the base, likely started by an artillery shell, marking San Diego County's first major brush fire of the season.

Climber Survives 1500-Foot Fall From Mt Hood Chute

Nancy Tarter, a 31-year-old climber from Portland, survived a 1500-foot tumble down the notorious white chute on Mt Hood while cramping, slipping, and tumbling end over end. She was hospitalized at Providence. The chute has claimed Den Welk, 20, in 1949.

Sunny Beach draws 100000 to Long Beach shores

A cool but sunny Sunday drew about 100,000 people to Long Beach beaches. Lifeguards rescued 20, four hurt. Injuries included a 15 year old knocked down at Rainbow Lagoon and a 23 year old with a back injury at 34 Fourth Place. A 12 year old needed stitches, a visitor from Los Angeles treated for glass cuts, and a lamp was broken by a beach ball. Total area crowd estimated at 800,000 with 69 rescues.

Long Awaited Ruling on 11 Reds Expected Today

The Supreme Court is expected to issue its long anticipated decision on the appeal of 11 Communist leaders convicted of conspiring to overthrow the United States government. The case, argued under the Smith Act, tests the act's constitutionality as a restraint on free speech. The court aims to adjourn for summer after releasing the ruling.
