Slain Couple’s Landlord Nabbed After Whittier Shootout
Bernardo Hernandez, 55, surrendered to Whittier police near his home at 10 p m admitting the fatal shootings of Lawrence and Otilia Garcia in an early Sunday dispute over a talk radio. Detectives said Hernandez claimed self defense after a face injury at the Garcia home. He led police to a missing revolver and faced questioning by Lt. Vic England. The case unfolded after a tip from a passerby and Hernandez wandered in the San Gabriel River bed for hours. Hernandez reportedly ate only two oranges during his 45 hour stakeout and threw away the weapon near the scene. He told investigators Garcia struck him first during a prior visit to the Esmeraldt Avenue home. The deaths of the tenants were not yet confirmed at the time of reporting. He remained in custody.

Bellflower Los Angeles County. Motorist John Windisch 44 of Wasco linked sun glare to a crash with a Pacific Electric Local car on Lakewood Boulevard. Windisch and 15 passengers plus two crew members were uninjured. The collision damaged the PE car’s switchbox ignited a trolley fire and blocked Lakewood Boulevard. CHP, sheriff’s deputies, and fire crews responded. The PE did not run a rescue train. Windisch’s car was dragged beside the PE car. The fire was extinguished and blamed on a short circuit from the damaged switch box.
