The Army announced a first deathless day for American troops in Korea, with no reported KIA in the 24-hour period ending 5 p.m Korean time Tuesday. Some wounded may recover. no confirmed deaths that day. The first U.S. casualty occurred July 9, 1950, with about 1500 weekly since then.
City Council approved new water rates aiming to add about 385000 in revenue for the current fiscal year. The plan includes a 60 cent service charge for all users and a per quantity charge, with small users seeing relief and the average bill rising about 23 percent. Councilman Bazil A. Carleson criticized the shift as a burden on average households.
City Manager Larh Vickers said the 51 cent tax rate may drop from the previously announced 1.01041 estimate if the local assessment roll supports it. LOS ANGELES July 17 9N5 Robert J Stephens 63 retired moving company employee strangled himself with a vise in the garage of his home today. Police said he left a note to his wife Hattie stating I can't go on like this. Mrs Stephens said he had been in ill health.

Alameda July 17 Miss Betty Louise Best a 23 year old Alameda nurse won custody of her 13 month old son from Vernal Stevens a 33 year old Honolulu police sergeant the court order prohibits Stevens from seizing the child and gives custody to Miss Best detailing Stevens long arrangement including multiple marriages and abductions noted earlier in Hawaii and California
