He is the second UC Berkeley faculty member named to an assistant Cabinet post following law professor Warren Oney Tit as assistant attorney general. Coke, 53, will depart for Washington today after a career in field crop production and soil management. Born in Downey he studied at Pomona College and graduated from UC Davis in 1923.

Bandits steal $400 from L B Theater in two hold ups
Two men, one armed with a revolver, robbed the Circle Drive-in Theater on Monday night and fled on foot with about $400. Earlier, an armed man tried to rob a cashier at the Lakewood Drive-in on Carson Street and Cherry Avenue but was frightened away by a patron’s car. Police suspect a connection between the two jobs as they search for the same suspects.
