Floodwaters engulf Downey Main Boulevard and several stores including J C Penney and Newsberry. Sandbag barriers failed to hold back the water as authorities detoured traffic on Firestone and poured rain continues. Firms report losses in the thousands and a complete business standstill with clerks laid off.
California delegates for the presidential nominating process will be chosen by party machines. Democrats pledged to Truman and Republicans to Warren. Most California voters do not favor the leading candidates, and the system is criticized as undemocratic. Eisenhower leads Taft in a Long Beach poll.
Long Beach schools will open today as superintendent Douglas A. Newcomb notes well paved grounds reduce flood risk. Parents decide if children attend while Artesia area schools face likely closures due to rising storm waters.
Allied lines faced intensified pressure as Communist forces attacked along the entire Korean front. Three MAGs were destroyed and one damaged in air battles over northwest Korea, with two planes brought down by jet wash. An-10en was shot down.

Long Beach lay ankle deep in water after a offshore storm swept Southern California, with more rain feared as a new system from the Gulf of Alaska approaches. The Weather Bureau traced the storm to remnants of a Taiwan rainfall event, while debris filled beaches and city crews worked to clear refuse with dredges and trucks.
