Fire Destroys Furniture Warehouse. Home Damaged Nearby

A warehouse storing new and used furniture burned intensely, flames rising over 20 feet and sending heat to a neighboring cottage on Walnut Avenue. Fire teams from three companies battled the blaze while residents helped limit damage. the owner of the ruined building is Charles Swanton of Beverly Hills. The probable cause cited is an overheated refrigerator, and traffic along Pacific Coast Highway and nearby streets was diverted for about an hour. Proprieter A. Wallace Edwards reported no damage to his home. Paul B. Thompson assisted with a garden hose to protect his cottage roof.

Ex-Suitor Strikes Woman With Gun

Mrs. Virginia R. Barton reported an assault after a former boyfriend pointed a gun, pulled the trigger, and struck her with it when it misfired. Earlier he twisted her arm, threw her, and took small sums during the day before she hid in a closet and called police.

Stray Mine Exploded at Laguna Beach

A Marine demolition team blew up an old mine containing 300 pounds of TNT that washed ashore four miles south of Laguna Beach. Officials said it likely drifted from enemy waters about seven years ago and was detonated with dynamite after its rusty mechanism failed. The blast was felt over a wide area. witness Jim Young saw the mine offshore near Day Point camp for two days before it reached shore.

Diana Schluter cared for 24 month old Mary E B Schluter at 1247 Wesley Drive when the infant Emma May Lougheed of 356 Golden Ave apparently rolled face down on the mattress and died. police reported the baby was dead on arrival at Seaside Hospital after being found in distress last night.

Division of Leathernecks To Join Fleet

A U S Marine commitment for Europe follows NATO announcing its goals for 50 divisions and 4000 warplanes plus strong naval forces for continental defense. The Marine division would join Adm Lynde McCormick s Atlantic command but not be stationed in Europe. it would be attached to the fleet and available if needed. No attempt to exceed the six division limit by Congress is implied.
