Douglas Aircraft Co. alleges the UAW Local 148 vote to resume the strike near the Long Beach plant is an intimidation tactic aimed at the Wage Stabilization Board. A Douglas spokesman cites partial WSB action, retroactive pay talks, and wage increases as context for the dispute ahead of a March 3 picket.
Rank and file members lost confidence in leaders after a Thursday night strike vote. Fewer than a thousand attended the vote on striking March 3 if remaining issues are not settled by then. The union has about 8900 members. Last Sunday nearly 000 members met at Municipal Auditorium for a mass meeting. If a strike vote was to be taken, it could have been continued on Page 16.
TOKYO February 23. United States reports more than 1100 planes lost in Korea so far, with about 462 Communist planes destroyed. Allied losses total 531 for FEAF through Jan 29, plus 631 Navy losses. others contributing include 15 planes from allied nations. FEAF says pilots push within 35 miles of the Yalu River to strike supply lines.
A petite brunette woman, about 5 feet 4 inches, robbed Mike's Liquor Store in Norwalk at 10:30 p.m. slamming clerk Lita Loving, 36, of Artesia, with a nickel revolver before escaping with $80. Loving was struck unconscious with a two inch head wound. suspect fled the scene.
A statewide manhunt ended when bandit leader Haven L. Walker, 33, of Los Angeles, was killed by South Gate police after abducting Bonnie Kareis during a robbery near Old River School Road and Firestone Boulevard. Walker, already a parolee for kidnapping and robbery, died from a shot through an automobile window. his unknown partner fled in a stolen car, later abandoned near Rancho Los Amigos Hospital.
