58 Stranded Veterans Happy Again Army Extends Leaves
Fifty eight GIs stranded in Los Angeles for more than a day won a last minute leave extension from the Army and flew home to Chicago and Detroit. They chartered a Trans Ocean Airlines DC-4 for a round trip from Schofield Barracks Hawaii. The group, part of the 40th Battalion Hawaii Infantry Training Center, was delayed while maintenance on a Great Lakes Airlines plane was completed. One Pvt Edward Mylenek Detroit had his wedding postponed. his friends funded a new ticket for him on another plane. Airline spokesmen said they would reach Chicago and Detroit the next morning.

Seamen Missing After Tankers Split Off Cape Cod
Two 10,000 ton American tankers were ripped apart by heavy seas off Cape Cod. Fifty crew members were missing or adrift as dawn broke. Coast Guard rescued 32 near frozen seamen from the stern section of the Pendleton awaiting further relief.

Worst Storm Fatal to 30 in New England
The winter storm battered New England with up to 31 inches of snow causing at least 30 deaths and stranding thousands. Waves pounded coastlines from Maine to Connecticut as snowplows fought five foot drifts and Maine reports 1500 people stranded in vehicles. Two lobster fishermen drowned near Pt Clyde, Me, and many deaths stemmed from shoveling fatigue or storm accidents. The Weather Bureau warned Northern Maine would see its heaviest fall tonight.

United Nations and Communist trade negotiators reached a full agreement at Panmunjom on a postwar peace conference to settle the Korean problem.
