Santa Ana officers undergo lie detector tests as the Orange County Grand Jury resumes its inquiry into the December disappearance of more than $600 in cash and bookie evidence from a police locker. Results are expected to be presented Feb 11.
A freak windstorm struck Hollywood and West Los Angeles injuring one person and uprooting about 45 trees. Police reported blocked streets and downed power lines as debris cluttered the area near Hollywood and Vine. Winds reached up to 435 miles per hour per Weather Bureau, with gusts rapidly jumping from 15 to 35 miles per hour.
Gen James A Van Fleet said a new Republic of Korea division has entered action on the eastern front and enough trained ROK troops exist to form two additional divisions. The announcement was made Wednesday, expanding allied ground strength in Korea.

New York and Pasadena based news report that Paul G. Hoffman, former Marshall Plan chief, resigns as Ford Foundation chairman to head Studebaker’s board. Trustees say Pasadena operations will move east, Hoffman to resign March 1, 1953, with offices to be in South Bend Indiana.
The Central News Agency reports that two of twelve American airmen listed as missing after a January 18 crash and sinking off South China were captured by Chinese Reds. The agency claims they were exhibited in a Swatow park as props in a hate America campaign.
Obituary for Ben Ames Williams 63 noted as a nationally known historical novelist who collapsed from a heart attack during a Brookline Country Club curling contest. The Brookline, Massachusetts native wrote House Divided and Splendor after a career writing over 400 short stories and journalism.
Burglars slit a kitchen window screen and ransacked Samuel J. Bergam’s residence at 4558 Tolbert Sr. missing are over 2400 in bonds clothing and jewelry valued at more than 600 and 405 in cash. The heist occurred between 5 and 10 p m Wednesday while Bergam was away.
