Crews Seek Survivors in Illinois Shaft
West Frankfort Illinois December 22 UP reports a massive explosion 500 feet underground at the New Orient mine. Coroner David Clayton says there are no bodies awaiting removal but about 75 workers remain trapped. Rescue teams battle 19 degree cold with help from state police and local squads. The Chicago Wilmington Franklin Coal Co mine is among the nation’s largest soft coal mines. Fireman Stewart Richardson notes about half of waiting workers remain in the cold awaiting progress.

Steel Wage Fight Tossed to Truman
A union spokesman rejected the offer as not in good faith arguing the steel industry bid for higher prices has been rejected by the government while workers are legally entitled to a wage increase.
