Draft Leader Puts Peak at 19 Millions
Santa Fe New Mexico reports Army draft director Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey said a 13 to 20 million man army is near the top feasible for the United States depending on war location and other factors. He noted 20-year-olds are nearly cleared from draft boards and 19-year-olds would begin enlisting in two to three states next month, with most states by February or March. Hershey and his wife were en route to the West Coast visiting their son Gilbert, a Marine captain wounded in Korea.
