In Sasebo Harbor a gas line tank exploded on the 25,000 ton Navy tanker Ashtabula causing a searing fire. The U S Navy reports two sailors killed, one missing and nine injured with three in critical condition. The ship operates from Long Beach.
At least two Long Reach residents serve on the stricken tanker crew. Lt Cam Frederick Paleigh, 49, of 3248 Adriatic Ave, and Machinist's Mate First Class C. B. Farman, 35, of 2354 Miramar Ave, are said to be on their third trip from Long Beach harbor. The explosion at 1 10 p m tore the ward deck, wrecking the area beside the Ajax repair ship. Casualties occurred on both ships as rescue parties continued efforts as reported on page 5.
Attock, a British oil company, reported oil discovered at 3365 feet in a new well in the Chandian field in Punjab. Initial flow reached 200 barrels per day. Attock already runs eight producing wells in the region.
The Weatherman warns of cloudy skies with no sun and predicts more rain Tuesday night. Rainfall through Saturday night totals about 0.44 inches, bringing the seasonal total to 3.73 inches. more rain is expected Sunday night. The forecast notes last year’s rainfall on this date was 1.39 inches after a 0.30 inch shower.

Burglars stole cash clothing jewelry and household appliances totaling 3454 from six victims police reported Sunday. A motel apartment at 1037 E Pacific Coast Hwy was burglarized with wrist watch and 92 stolen. Appliances valued at 300 were taken from 6899 Falcon Ave car. A theft at Burger Haven yielded 75 taken via pass key or from inside the premises.
Mrs. Tucker of Long Beach was killed in a highway collision that also seriously injured her husband and a student rider. Barbara Kerber, 20, also died in the same crash 30 miles south of Carmel on Highway 1. The bodies were taken to Farlinger Mortuary in Carmel.
Nine armed convicts escaped Western Pennsylvania Penitentiary after wounding two guards. One captured near the wall. six fled in a stolen 1941 sedan. two remained at large. They used a cutting device to breach a roof and descend to the yard, with a 60 foot rope slide.

Aldrich of New York as the United States ambassador to Great Britain to succeed Walter Gifford who resigns Aldrich chairs Chase National Bank of Newark He also created a special committee to study proposals for streamlining executive branches of government The appointments were announced by Arthur H. Vandenberg Jr Eisenhower will meet Aldrich after a session with John Foster Dulles and will also meet Gen Lucius B Clay Harold Stassen and Henry Cabot Lodge as part of a broad delegation.
