Reports from government sources claim the Communist Youth Festival in the Russian controlled part of Berlin failed as many youths deserted toward the American zone. However experienced correspondents who witnessed the festival report factual occurrences with an estimated attendance of over 2 million youths, described as the brightest from their districts.
An American GI at the Korea advance camp on Aug 23 says he is ready to move after hearing truce talks were off. When asked which direction, he replies Might as well go north.
The Navy announced on August 22 that it is involuntarily recalling 25 reserve chaplains to active duty. The action widens chaplain staffing as part of ongoing personnel measures in Washington.
Communists broke off the Korean armistice talks amid allegations the United Nations bombed Kassong. The U N denied the charge, calling it a frameup and citing the timing of the talks’ suspension as evidence of a fraudulent incident. Vice Admiral Joy said the rapid collapse of talks supported the claim.
Washington reports the Defense Department says any North Korean action will be reviewed by General Ridgway for potential impact on peace talks. A spokesman stressed U S aim to end the Korean War if possible, but emphasized the decision rests with Ridgway. Senate Foreign Relations leaders Connally and Wiley condemned the break in negotiations, with Connally saying the Communists had no grounds for halting talks and Wiley calling the allied bombing claim phony.
South Korean troops killed or wounded an estimated thousands of enemy troops in one of their greatest battles of the war in the Yangeu mountains. The Eighth Army reported they captured large stocks of equipment and completed a two day campaign to win ridgelines on the east central front. They finished mopping up the fast enemy troops daily, and officials noted poor damage and widely dispersed planted evidence suggesting a Communist plan.
Long Beach adopts a historic tax rate the lowest since 1909 with a total assessed valuation of 379 million dollars up 18 million from last year. Unsecured personal property taxes exceed 500 thousand dollars collected so far with deadlines set for Sept 1 and delinquency penalties after dates in November through April.
