Rep Norris Poulson held a steady read on veteran Mayor Fletcher Bowron as returns from about half the precincts showed Poulson with 53,533 votes to Bowron's 45,327 from 1366 of 3641 precincts. Bowron, mayor for 15 years, appeared set for a runoff with Poulson.
Arthur J. Lavelle, 69, died of a heart attack Tuesday after voting in the primary. May 26 general election results show Poulson leading a tight mayoral contest by a margin needing a majority, while Aldrich, Burke, and others trailed. The United Nations protested a Communist offer to repatriate 600 sick and wounded Allied prisoners, including 150 non-Koreans, calling the total "incredibly small." At Panmunjom the UN disclosed readiness to repatriate 5806 disabled Communists while noting the share relative to total prisoners remained similar on both sides.
