Signal Hill moves to a May 29 special election to decide whether to legalize draw poker. Mayor Tomlin stated the council had little choice after public debate and a unanimous, quick resolution.
A bar acquaintance knocked Robert Connelly Fahrner to the ground near 430 West Anaheim and robbed him of about 600 in traveler's checks. Fahrner, 31, said the assailant unconscious him then relieved his pockets while they walked in the beach area.
Negotiations between Retail Clerks Union Local 324 and Food Employers Council representatives extended into the night in Long Beach. Clerks seek a 5 weekly raise and 2 extra for medical plan, while employers offer 2 weekly rise. both sides say progress was made and plan to meet again as a strike threat looms with 1700 potential walkouts.

General Douglas MacArthur's Tuesday communique states the Communists may field at least 63 divisions, the largest strength in the Korean campaign. Chinese divisions at full strength total 10,500 men and North Korean divisions range from 3,000 to 7,000 men. Allied officers say Reds delay offensive to exploit the rainy season and hamper Allied armor.
In Allerton Indiana a Sunday service turned into a riot during a church dispute. Rev Syd Austin says nine people were injured two severely enough for hospital care. Sheriff Nova E Kelly responded and an ambulance was dispatched. Yelling hymns books mud and pews were torn amid clashes over church affiliations.
Albert Maltz, one of ten Hollywood writers cited for contempt of Congress for refusing to answer on Communist ties, is released from the federal road camp in Mill Point West Virginia. He was sentenced to a year in prison and a $1000 fine after conviction on the contempt charge. He began his term on June 29 last year.
