Soft-water showers cost Navy millions aboard Vietnam duties
UPI reports sailors face costly soft-water showers, dubbed Hollywood showers, as Navy ships rely on distilled water for bathing and combat operations in the Vietnam era. The 6 second wash, 5 second rinse, leaves soap residue, raising desalination costs and straining boiler water for propulsion and aircraft catapults. Some ships assign violators to hot 130 degree engine room watches as penalties.
