Delegates Walk Out Over McCarthy At-Large Delegates
Supporters of Senator Eugene J. McCarthy walked out of a New York Democratic state committee meeting over the selection of at large delegates to the national convention. The committee elected a slate with limited McCarthy support after his aides sought half of the 65 at large votes. McCarthy backers contended many pro McCarthy delegates were chosen by county leaders and unknown to them. Eleanor Clark French condemned the process as perfidy and estimated only 6 or 7 votes were truly for McCarthy as about 1,000 people watched in the Commodore Hotel ballroom.
