Spurned Vietnamese refugees, fleeing their Communist homeland, found asylum in Israel near Tel Aviv after being plucked from a fishing boat. They were housed in Ofakim, promised jobs and Hebrew lessons, and about half may seek U.S. visas. Prime Minister Begin praised the act as humane and historic. The group includes 34 men, 16 women, and 16 children.

Jail Fire Kills 42 in Maury County
A juvenile runaway set a fire in a padded jail cell at Maury County Jail in Columbia Tennessee. Forty two inmates and visitors died from smoke and asphyxiation as doors could not be opened with the mistaken key system. Duke Ellington Band Member Drowns in Anaheim Motel Pool
Verey Marion Jr., 25, of Omaha, Nebraska, a member of Duke Ellington's band, drowned Sunday afternoon after apparently swimming alone at a motel pool on Harbor Boulevard in Anaheim. Police said he was found in the deep end at about 3:30 p.m. and died at the scene. Ellington's band was performing nearby at the time.
