A Nationalist commander reports that Communist China has massed heavy artillery, 18 to 20 infantry divisions, and 300 to 500 fighter aircraft including MIG11s and MIG19s within range of Quemoy. The island features granite tunnels, underground storage, tanks, and reinforced shelters to deter invasion, with 70 000 defenders and 45 000 civilians supported by buried cables and fortified positions.

US Fleet Buildup Denied by Pacific Commander
A Pacific Fleet spokesman told the Associated Press that 7th Fleet units had deployed toward Formosa, including ships from Yokosuka. He said the moves were almost routine and a general redistribution of forces to handle potential issues in the Formosa Strait. Naval officials in Washington and Las Vegas voiced doubt of a large Chinese attack and saw no greater danger than in prior crises.
