America's sweet tooth hits the chocolate industry hard

Through 1968 to 1975 consumption fell from 20 to about 17 pounds per person annually, with production down 4 percent in 1974 and cocoa bean costs rising. Manufacturers cut cocoa butter by substituting cheaper oils and testing coatings, while taste shifts and price pressures spur ongoing lab blends and flavor experiments.

United Nations aims at billion-dollar food fund by 1976
Rome UPI The World Food Council seeks a 1 billion a year fund to help developing nations feed themselves. John Hannah head of the council said agreement could allow operation in early 1976 with strong support from the United States and oil-exporting nations. The plan would boost foreign investment in agriculture by about 60 percent but still fall short of the 1980 target of 5 billion a year in food assistance. Hannah urged food-exporting nations to raise pledged aid for 1975 76 from 9 to 10 million tons of grain.
