Litton near collapse seeks Navy payment of 450 million
Senator William Proxmire says Litton Industries, a major Navy shipbuilder, is on the brink of disaster and pressing for 450 million dollars claiming contract changes by the Navy. Officials testifying say only a small part is justifiable, while Litton insists it has fully complied with accounting standards and that Navy payments for submarine mods and four ammunition ships are long overdue. Proxmire urged the Navy to declare Litton in default to prevent a financial crisis, warning the firm could be forced to show solvency to auditors and creditors.

Meat Price Controls Debate Hots Up at Sunday hearing
The seven member Price Commission met for four hours to weigh possible temporary meat price controls after a government report showed May food prices rising following a dip. Chairman C Jackson Grayson led a tightly guarded session as officials downplayed imminent action. President Nixon hinted at boosting meat imports to ease prices while Agriculture Secretary Earl L. Butz opposed ceilings on farm products. A Consumer advocate group blamed grocery chains for price spikes noting beef farm prices were flat since November 1971 while retail prices jumped 53 percent.
