Violent crime up 7 percent in California early 1970s
Sacramento reports a 7.2 percent statewide rise in violent crime for January to March, with homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault up 1.2 percent in California's 34 largest departments. Officials caution against trend interpretation amid inflation effects and higher value thefts. Forcible rape up 18.2 percent, attributed by an aide to greater reporting and gentler victim treatment. National figures show a 7 percent decrease in the same crimes.
