Fewer Americans Travel Abroad as Spending Rises Despite Drop
The Commerce Department reports 6.4 million Americans traveled overseas in 1974, down 5.8 percent from the year before, with Western Europe visits falling by 600,000 to 3.1 million. Despite the travel decline, total spending overseas rose 8.2 percent to a record 9.2 billion dollars, driven by higher air fares and currency effects. Spending in nearby regions increased while Japan saw a decline.
