State Engineer Speaks On Crosstown Freeway Vital Need
Edward Telford of the State Division of Highways told the Downtown Long Beach Lions Club that the Pacific Coast Freeway is essential to prevent heavy congestion in central Long Beach. He said the freeway would work with the San Diego Freeway and warned that without it, strip slums may form. He cited a 40,000-vehicle daily load on Pacific Coast Highway west of the traffic circle and urged rapid action within the statewide master plan to complete the system by 1950. He added that plans proceed despite Long Beach council opposition and outlined possible routes near Anaheim Street.
