California approves higher retiree benefits and lower age
Gov. Reagan signed a bill increasing retirement benefits by 20 percent for 400,000 state city county and school district employees. The legislation lowers the mandatory retirement age from 70 to 67 and is funded by future earnings of the state retirement system with no extra cost to the state. The sponsor Sen. Donald Grunsky says the move encourages earlier retirements and expects annual retirements to rise from about 8,000 to as many as 15,000 next year.
