Bearded Fred Moore Guards $15,000 at Party in San Francisco
After publisher Stewart Brand offered $20,000 for causes at an all night party, $5,000 vanished. Bearded Fred Moore, claiming to be a “human being,” kept the remaining cash in a van and scheduled a month later meeting to decide its use. Brand, creator of the Whole Earth Catalog, sought to observe what happens when money is freely spent by the counter culture.
