U.S. River Craft Transfer to South Vietnam Reaches 273 Boats
In Saigon on Monday UPI reported the United States will hand over 273 river craft to the South Vietnamese Navy on Tuesday. The transfer, part of the Vietnamization program, includes 162 river patrol boats 74 river assault craft and 36 swift boats. The turnover boosts South Vietnam’s combat fleet to 525 crafts and supports about 80 percent of the brown water boats in the country. Transfers began in June 1968 and progress is to finish by December. The South Vietnamese navy now numbers 37 000 men with crews trained in Saigon by U.S. Navy instructors.
