County budget record sets 22 cent tax hike in 1975

County supervisors approve a 3 billion budget with a 21.81 to 22 cent rate increase, the highest county levy to date. The measure cuts net spending by 33.2 million, reserves 10 million contingency, uses 4.5 million revenue sharing to lower the rate, and notes the final rate depends on July assessments and a potential 5 percent valuation rise. Revenue sharing allocates about 12 million to groups and 17 million to transit subsidies.

The 41 to 0 vote included dissent from Pete Schabarum who criticized the package aimed at funding improvements. The debate over subsidies, zones, and grid plans touched Long Beach, East Los Angeles, and municipal lines, with critics warning the extra charges would hit outlying areas hardest.
