Independent LBCC urged to pursue separate board

Faculty advocates of full independence for Long Beach City College pressed the Board of Education to back a separate board ballot question for the November election. Dr Richard Fairchild led the effort, with the Academic Senate seeking to co sponsor a pro argument for the ballot. The Long Beach League of Women Voters will draft a separate argument, and the group will contribute its own if trustees choose otherwise. Voters in Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill and Avalon face a fall vote on whether a semi autonomous college should have its own board or stay under the unified school district trustees. The issue stems from October legislation signed by Gov. Reagan. Fairchild urged the board to have Dr Schuyler Joyner study separation costs if not yet done. Board president Elizabeth W. Wallace said the question is still being carefully considered, noting major political and philosophic factors to weigh.
