Pot Initiative poised to qualify for California ballot
San Francisco backers of the California Marijuana Initiative say they have gathered enough valid signatures to qualify for the November ballot. The measure would legalize cultivation and possession for personal use but prohibit large scale sales or cultivation. Spokeswoman Eileen Janowitz noted 231,000 signatures are on file and more than 190,000 were turned in, exceeding the 326,000 needed.

In Sacramento a bill to create a Fair Campaign Practices Commission to curb mudslinging in California elections died in the Senate Finance Committee for the second year running. Sen. George Deukmejian said the state lacks machinery to handle complaints from candidates who feel smeared by opponents. "If you want to do something about unfair campaign tactics, this is the bill to do something," said the Long Beach Republican.
