Bernard Bergman gets four months in fraud case
Bernard Bergman a nursing home magnate and rabbi was sentenced in New York federal court to four months in jail for defrauding the government of 1.2 million in Medicaid funds. The sentence drew sharp criticism from state prosecutor Charles Hynes and observers who saw perceived bias toward the privileged. Prosecutors said state and federal audits showed larger Medicaid overcharges, while Bergman’s lawyers argued for mercy amid claims of a life devoted to elder care. The case raises questions about justice and the impact on residents of Bergman’s facilities.
