Mail thief reveals ease of stealing U.S. secrets
Convicted mail thief Robert Cudak told a Senate subcommittee how easy it was for his gang to plunder mail pouches at major U.S. airports. He described stealing more than 100 million in jewelry, furs, securities, and even occasional government papers from 1967 to 1970, with some documents bearing Defense, CIA, and State Department addresses. He said none of the classified papers were moved and all were destroyed, admitting fear of handling such material. He also noted that documents could have been sold to the New York Times or other agents, and that his share of stolen goods over four years was about 1 million.
