San Francisco tops nation in heroin addiction rate
A federal NIDA study finds San Francisco has the highest per capita heroin addiction rate among 24 major metro areas, while Buffalo has the lowest. New York City has the highest estimated number of heroin addicts at about 69,000 in May, with Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, and Philadelphia following in estimated totals. The study notes these figures are estimates based on admissions, emergency room cases, and deaths, not precise counts.
