Bread Industry Target in Civil Rights Buying Campaign
Dr. King named Cleveland bread industry as the initial target in a selective buying campaign to win better jobs for Negroes. He said the campaign begins tomorrow with a plan to pressure all bread firms through community withdrawal. King spoke after a workshop with about 200 ministers and outlined Operation Breadbasket and a $150,000 fund to support related civil rights programs in Cleveland this summer. He noted a possible meeting with Mayor Locher and described Cleveland as highly explosive yet with local goodwill to advance peaceful change. Ford recalls 35100 trucks and buses for a steering defect, including 25000 in the United States.
