Soviet Trawlers Back Down After Mataco Bluffs Off North Vietnam
On Yankee Station off North Vietnam the Soviet spy trawlers Barograph and Defleckton tested the USS Mataco by crossing its bow and closing to about a hundred yards. Lt. Downey M. Ware said the Mataco crossed their path and the Soviets backed off. Both ships then halted as carrier forces passed, with Ware noting the Soviets desired to probe but showed cautious, capable seamanship.
