National Spelling Bee Victory for John Paola in Washington
John Paola, 14, trained with three dictionaries for nine months to win the National Spelling Bee in Washington D C finishing ahead of Joan O Leary as the two parochial school students battled to the last word. Paola earned 1000 dollars a color TV and a school plaque while O Leary won 500 for Yonkers New York. The contest featured 8 million pupils and highlighted Paola’s disciplined study with Sister Mary Grace and Sister Paulita at St Bonaventure in Glenshaw Pennsylvania.
