Judge Fines for Illicit Campaign Posters in Long Beach
Two campaign workers, John Topp and Carl Schiemeyer, pleaded guilty in Long Beach Municipal Court to illegally posting placards. Each faced a fine of 124 dollars or 10 days in jail, with until June 23 to pay. They admitted knowing the act was illegal but claimed the law was not enforced. Officers observed signs stapled to utility poles on May 28, tied to Martin Stein, a City Council candidate. Schiemeyer was later cited for posting on Orange Avenue near Del Amo Boulevard. Five days later Stein and Saul Stolzberg accused authorities of suppressing their campaign.
