Ships Rush Extra Food to Hawaii Amid West Coast Piers Tie Up

Ships rush extra food and supplies to Hawaii as West Coast piers clog with cargo. Matson Navigation adds five slips from Los Angeles and San Francisco to move materials to Hawaii, part of stockpiling after last March’s coast-wide strike. Officials say Hawaii’s warehousing is stressed, with shipments up about 50 percent and more than 1,000 ships tied up on the coast. A cooling-off period followed Kennedy’s Taft Hartley action, aiming to prevent shortages in the islands. Meanwhile PMA and ILWU talks in San Francisco seek a deal to resume night work at Long Beach and Los Angeles harbors.
