GAO Says Most Pakistan Relief Funds Diverted to Fortifications
The General Accounting Office reported about 10 million of last fall’s humanitarian relief to Pakistan was diverted to build military fortifications on the East Pakistan Bangladesh border. The GAO noted that much aid was not provided or scheduled for shipment and that relief assets including trucks, jeeps, and cyclone aid had been reassigned for military use, with public works funds redirected to border defenses rather than food distribution.
