House OKs extension of 1965 Voting Rights Act
The House approved an 11 year extension of the 1965 Voting Rights Act by 341 to 70 after rejecting GOP attempts to delete sections extending protections to Spanish Americans and other minorities. The measure would broaden bilingual election assistance and keep federal oversight in covered areas including seven southern states and parts of New York and California.

Ford veto battle and jobs bill overrides
Democrats favored overruling the veto while 22 Democrats joined 123 Republicans to sustain. The House passed the final form 293 to 109 with 49 Republicans voting for it. Ford called sustaining the veto a significant victory to curb government spending. Labor Secretary Dunlop noted a Ford plan to fund public service jobs through July 1976 and shimmer South jobs. Ford’s veto message claimed total spending exceeded his recommended level and aimed to limit year end totals to about 80 billion. The debate featured emphasis on unemployment rates and a push by Speaker Carl Albert for an affirmative House vote. The Senate has not voted as the veto remains in effect. This was Ford’s 82nd veto with Congress having overridden three prior times.
