Spirit of ’76 wood carver perfects period uniforms
Henry A. Cresse, a Lakewood resident and longtime police worker, carves eight inch figures for the Spirit of 76 scene with authentic Revolutionary War attire. He redraws front and side views from pictures then shapes arms separately before gluing. Cresse emphasizes accuracy, notes Willard’s painting inspiration and that the Spirit was imagined by a cartoonist in Philadelphia in 1876. He spent months carving a color guard and drummers, has refused offers to sell his collection, and continues carving daily.
