Marine writes of toy M16 and death of son in Vietnam
A 19 year old Marine wrote his brother that the M 16 rifle in Vietnam was a plastic toy and that many are wounded or killed from the lack of fire. He pledged to get an M 14 and soon after his tour ended he was killed. In Dorchester a Marine colonel notified the boy’s parents of the death one day before he was due to ship out. In a separate case a San Francisco judge set aside a 480000 dollar damage award against Union Oil. The award to Richard Simpson Fresno gas station operator stemmed from a 1967 suit over the consign ment system of service stations. The Supreme Court later ruled the Union Oil pricing plan violated antitrust laws.
