Death penalty override uncertainty in Senate vote

In Sacramento, nine senators remain undecided as efforts to override Gov. Brown's death penalty veto stall. The current tally shows 13 Democrats for, 8 Republicans for, 8 Democrats against, 2 Republicans against, and 9 undecided or declining to state. The measure then heads to the Assembly, where a two thirds majority is even harder to secure.

He spoke after a UN desert conference in Sacramento about humility in arid development, urging nations to share and preserve the planet. He stressed not knowing how lawmakers will vote until the override vote.

ACLU Attacks Brown Over Anti Crime Package

The ACLU says Gov. Brown mirrors his predecessor in civil liberties stance praising his death penalty veto but opposing mandatory sentencing and expanded prison rights. Officials argue the crime package speeds trials and targets the violent, while criticising court and probation policy changes.
