Origins and meanings of favorite son and grass roots terms
The terms favorite son and grass roots carry distinct roots. Favorite son began as a commendatory label for George Washington in 1777 and now marks a candidate favored by a specific state or county, often an officeholder. Grass roots started as a mining phrase about soil beneath the surface and now denotes politics rooted in ordinary people and local support.
