Three youths including two servicemen drowned in swimming accidents and four persons were burned in two spectacular boat explosions Sunday. Lifeguards rescued over 25 swimmers as crowds jammed Southland ports and beaches. The two servicemen swept to their deaths at Newport Beach within an hour amid dangerous currents. A tremendous explosion followed.
Washington UPI John L Lewis rejected joining calls to denounce James R Hoffa before any court verdict and attacked government forces and the press for pressuring the union chief. He stressed he would not condemn Hoffa without proof of guilt. Meanwhile a Catalina Island blast aboard the Five C's injured several boaters, with rescue and investigations ongoing.
Plasterers threaten a walkout near Los Angeles and Orange Counties over a 12 4/1 cent hourly wage demand and a hiring hall security clause. The dispute involves the Seven Plasterers Union and United Steelworkers in steel industry negotiations spurred by President Eisenhower's stance on inflation and wage pressures.
Across the Nation reports 1000 fail to locate a 200 to 300 pound bear near wooded areas and golf courses, despite many sightings by police and civilians. In New York Oklahoma fugitive William A. Douglas, 37, arrested after a cattle rustling case tied to $50,000 loot, while a Fire Island hotel and boat house fire injures no one. Parachute stuntman David Herron, 19, survives a wire fall during a Westhampton auto race, rescued uninjured as thousands watch.
Beaver Dam Kentucky report on 41 hour cave-in at Kea Coal Co. mine ten miles south of town. Three miners Jake Lewis Don McCleron and Earl Bennett survived the ordeal after a coal mine roof collapse. They were fed via a sprinkler pipe and communicated through a broken line. They expressed relief and humor despite exhaustion and danger.
Holiday weekend traffic disasters killed sixteen people and injured over 300 across Southern California with six deaths in the Long Beach Orange County area. The toll rose above last year and a national count showed 432 total fatalities from Memorial weekend.
A pedigree WM dog, described as a top scrapper, was defeated by a neighbor's low-slung dog. The mutt bit off a rear leg, prompting disbelief from the owner who questioned the breed before muttering a crude joke about a crocodile.

It excludes hospital care but covers surgery and doctor visits, home or hospital, limited X ray and lab services. Subscribers pay $1 per office or hospital call and $2 per home visit, with lab fees from 20 cents to $10.
