Heavy rains and mud stalled a 3,000-man Cambodian force attempting to retake the firom plateau on Thursday. Allied strikes in the central highlands killed 44 Communists in a four-hour battle as two battalions reached the plateau's southern slopes while others stalled.
Tehran reports a powerful earthquake devastated scores of villages in northeast Iran. Rescue teams recovered more than 100 bodies as official counts rose with extensive debris. About 2,000 injured were feared, with work ongoing across a vast epicenter spanning from the Afghanistan border to near the Caspian Sea.
Police faced sniper fire as moving bands of youths looted, threw firebombs and rocks at cruisers in Hartford North End on the third night of racial unrest. Similar incidents occurred in South Green and Charter Oak Terrace with police using tear gas.
Esteemed conductor George Szell died in Cleveland after a heart attack at 73 concluding a tenure with the Cleveland Orchestra since 1946. His death followed a period of hospitalization and a decision not to conduct this winter. Also noted were Barbirolli’s death in London and Szell’s early career rise in Europe and the Met debut in 1942.
Dan Kimball a WWII B-17 pilot with Jimmy Doolittle and former Secretary of the Navy during the Korean War died in Washington at 74. He recently headed Aerojet General Corp. and had homes in Washington and Palm Springs. He served as Navy civilian head from July 31 1951 to January 19 1953 and led Aerojet as president and chairman.
Victor Martin 31 of Woodland Hills walked into a Tacoma police station Monday claiming to have vanished since July 13 when his clothes were found piled near Pt. Mugu Beach. He had told his wife he would go to the beach. A three day air and sea search followed the disappearance.
Prof Edwin Paget of Raleigh NC, 70, emeritus at North Carolina State University, completed his 80th double ascent of Pikes Peak to 14100 feet. His 459th and 460th climbs began in 1919. this season he reached 38th and 39th summits. He aims for 45 more trips this year. The first ascent took 3 hours 32 minutes, the second 4 hours 25 minutes. Paget uses running climbs to prove exercise remains beneficial with age. Separately, Republican National Chairman Rogers Morton accused Democrats of trying to cleanse their conscience over their youth policy after Lawrence OBrien urged peace and domestic focus to win the youth vote.
John Gardner will resign as head of the National Urban Coalition to lead a citizen movement aimed at shaking up the political system. The new Common Cause will be an offshoot of the Urban Coalition's Action Council and may dissolve the council as it opens activities to general public membership.
A spokesman says the August issue will not be distributed in Great Britain due to objections from the royal family over a story about Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon. The anonymous author reportedly claims the couple are harsh to each other at parties, reducing invitations.
